Doral School uses the Cobb Dolphin 19 theatre as classroom space

Playing today at the Cobb Dolphin 19 Cinemas: Bad Boys II, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Freaky Friday, geography and math. Opening Tuesday: civics.

Students of Doral Academy Charter Schools' new middle school will get their lessons today -- and probably for the next several weeks -- at the Dolphin Mall's mega movie hall.

The cinema has reserved three of its theaters for about 750 students whose new school is still under construction. Two more could be added if needed, said principal Bernardo Montero.

For now, the staff will teach three periods a day for 1 ½ hours each to massive classes comprised of each grade level -- sixth, seventh and eighth, Montero said.

''We're going to simulate our block schedule,'' Montero said. ``We should have a very structured environment, like the students are used to.''

Most of the students at the new school, 11100 NW 27th St., are from the combined Doral Academy middle and high school that opened in 2000.

This is the first year the charter, which also operates an elementary, will operate the middle school separately, but the building seems far from opening. The principal promises it will be a month -- two at the most.

''It looks really raw now, like a building in Baghdad,'' he said.
